38 Strong...!!!

OooH What a Night!

Thank YOU to All the Community Members who came out last night to support the Board of Education: Candidate's Forum! Although attendance was not nearly representative of our city or our student populations -- those who made themselves available were certainly provided with enough information to consider a candidate for the April 21st election. And if last night was not enough -- the LWV Forum is just around the corner!

All 10 Candidates were present and presented their position as to why they would be the best fit for the Plainfield Board of Education. Each Candidate's profile can be found in the archive section of this Blog at the bottom of the page and to your immediate right ------>.

I extend my sincerest thank you to the candidates for their participation in last night's forum, and for sharing their views, passion and direction for the educational system and THE CHILDREN in our fair city. I look forward to supporting and working with whomever the constituents decide to honor with the position of Plainfield Board of Education Member.

Be Well,
*Tootles*

Dear BOE Candidate...

Questions From the Public...

COME Tomorrow Evening
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Washington Community School
To Find Out -- How our BOE Candidates Net Out!

Following is a list of questions that were received by the public with regard to our upcoming BOE Candidates Forum. Several of these questions will be asked tomorrow night, however because this is only a 2 hours forum it would be impossible to ask all the questions submitted.

So - to our BOE Candidates --here is what is on the hearts and minds of your constituents

From NJ Forum:

The board approved the superintendent's reorganization plan, which included the creation of high-paying administrative positions while eliminating teachers and guidance counselors. What ideas do you have for restoring teaching positions in the next contract?

The current superintendent has been accused of micromanaging just about everything in the district and thereby not allowing the principals to deal with handling problems by themselves and with their own ideas. How do you feel about the superintendent and board of education meddling in the daily operations of each school?

What do you think should be done about the increased size of classes?

Our secondary schools currently and for a long time have eliminated "remedial" classes. The classes are heterogeneously grouped placing all levels of students in one classroom. How do you feel about heterogeneous grouping for high school students?

Should we create "remedial" classes for our students who fall below accepted levels on their standardized tests? If so, what should the cap size be for those classes?

Will the establishment of a new charter school and a school for the performing arts dilutes the "talent pool" of students who attend Plainfield High School?

How do you feel about privatizing some of the services in the district and thereby eliminating district personnel such as custodians, bus drivers, etc.?

We have a growing number of special education students in the district who must be "included" in the regular classrooms thereby adding to the size of the classes. Why do you suppose the numbers are growing and how do you think the district should deal with it?

Plainfield receives a sizeable amount of state aid for education. Why then are we still without the resources that the surrounding districts have -- such as computers and other technology?

How has the board wasted money in the past and how would you correct this?

How do you propose overseeing the wasteful spending by non-teaching departments throughout the district such as the two huge flat screen tv's hanging on the wall in the buildings' and grounds' department?

Do you think the settlement of the superintendent's salary should have been negotiated by someone who was experienced in bargaining rather than offering a salary, which could have been settled for less? How could the district have saved money in its settlement of the superintendent's salary?

From the PEPTalk Blog

What is the most urgent problem facing the school system and what specific solution do you have to address it?

Despite the influx of state aid, Plainfield still embarrassingly lacks technology and resources to keep pace with other districts. How did this happen and what has to be done to correct it?

What issues face our growing Latino population and how will you address them?

Can any of the incumbents speak about any initiative that they've introduced and talk about how it is doing in the district?

Do you advocate a change in the way things are done by the board? If so, what would you change?

Would you be opposed to rotating the board meetings among the neighborhood schools? Or would you defer to the superintendent's present system?

Do you favor putting control of individual schools into the hands of the principals or into the hands of the superintendent?

Do you favor or would you promote having the board of education meetings televised locally?

What is your stance on social promotions in the elementary and middle schools?

Given the choice of cutting a social service or cutting teaching jobs, which would you support? Why?

Has the Plainfield Public School System outgrown the need for an employee's union?

Plainfield no longer has an adult high school. Should an adult high school be created? Why? Why not?

How is it not hypocritical to want to be a member of the BOE and makes important decisions for the children of others that will impact them for years to come, if the candidate's own choice for their own children is to enroll them in a charter school? How would they as a BOE member be able to be taken seriously and advocate fairly for PPS and encourage parents and children when the perception is "not my child" regarding allowing PPS to educate their child?

Meet BOE Candidate #8

Mahogany Hendricks
3 year term

Brief List of Accomplish and Affilations:

  • Life long resident of the City of Plainfield
  • Graduate Plainfield Public School System
  • BS in Business Administration
  • Pursuing MBA at Centenary College, Metro Park
  • Founding member of The Juneteenth African American Heritage Organization
  • Former Participant in The Safe Haven Program
  • Former Participant in The Safe Haven Mentoring Program
  • Participant Plainfield High School Peer Mentoring Program
  • Former Cheerleading Coach Plainfield Pop-Warner Vikings

Occupation/Profession: Staffing Specialist

I am a single mother of a 7 year old daughter who attends Queen City Academy

My primary reason for seeking a position on the BOE is to help set policies and procedures that will enable our school system to work effectively and efficiently. To ensure that the curriculum that is passed is a curriculum that challenges our students and enables them to compete with students outside of our district. I am also seeking a position on the BOE because I know that I will be able to help the board review the schools budget and can adhere to making sure that monies are allocated in a responsible manner. The last reason I am seeking a position on the Board of Education is because I feel that my background in Human Resources and my love for the community will be an asset to the Students, the teachers, the parents and the community as a whole.

(A). My goal as a member of the Board of Education is to ensure that the policy and procedures that are set and the budgets that are passed are those that have been carefully reviewed and analyzed to ensure that I am making a thought out decision that will be for the betterment of our children. I intend to ask the hard questions, evaluate the answers, speak with my fellow board members about my views and concerns to ensure and vote with a sound clear thought out decision process.

(B). My goal is to ensure that the administration team that is approved by the Board are qualified and receiving a competitive salary. I indeed to do this by reviewing credentials, asking the hard questions and evaluating the answers to ensure that the correct people are in the correct position at the correct salary. I plan to discuss my concerns and views with my fellow Board members and have an open dialog to come to sound decisions.

a. The qualities that I possess are the following:
i. I am a life-long residant of Plainfield
ii. I have attended and graduated from the Plainfield Public School System
iii. I have a BS in Business Administration and am currently pursing my MBA
iv. I am analytical in my thought processes and thinking method
v. I have a love and respect for the City of Plainfield and the children that reside here. I believe that our community and school district holds great talent and once it is properly challenged we will be able to uphold our name as The Queen City.

I believe cooperative and collaborative are the best working relationship. Decisions on the Board cannot be past without a majority vote, therefore all members should have a chance to voice their concerns, issues, opinions and facts. We should be able to agree to disagree at times, we should be able to hold respectful debates and vote in a way that will be in the best interest of our stakeholders. I will ensure that this happens by being open to the other Board Members ideas concerns, issues, opinions, and facts and by voicing my concerns, issues, opinions and facts.

I feel that communication is the key to any relationship and therefore I believe making ourselves accessible to the parents, administration and employees is the one way to open up communication. The Board member(s) that you are communicating with will be able to direct you to the correct person, or the correct process in handling any concern or idea that you may have.

I feel that I am a great asset to the Board of Education and can ensure that I will do my best in holding myself, the Board, and the Superintended accountable for the decisions that are made. I will ensure the budget that is passed is allocated in a cost effective manner, I will ensure that the curriculum that is set before the board is evaluated to ensure it will allow our students to maximize their potential, I will do my best in getting the community involved in our school district, I will ensure that the board goes back to the business of governance. Finally, With likeminded individuals on the board that hold various backgrounds and strengths, who are not afraid to ask questions and who are able to agree to disagree at times, I believe we can move our school district forward.

2717. FYI: SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES NIGHT by conniebuwa, 3/22/09 11:39 ET

INTERESTED PLAINFIELD BLOGGERS, THE PLAINFIELD EDUCATION ASSOCIATION WILL SPONSOR "CANDIDATES NIGHT" ON TUESDAY, MARCH 24th, 2009 FROM 4:30-7:00 pm PHS CAFETERIA.

WE HAVE ALSO JOINED WITH PARENTS EMPOWERING PARENTS (PEP) TO GET THE COMMUNITY OUT FOR THEIR FORUM BEING HELD ON MONDAY, MARCH 30, 2009 AT THE WASHINGTON COMMUNITY SCHOOL 6:30 - 8:30.

We invite all of you bloggers out there to not just talk about change, but be about the change.

With the economic crisis, we must step up and play a proactive role in electing Board Members who will intellectually make the tough budget decisions that will best service our students. We no longer have the luxury of sitting on the sidelines, times are critical, money is tight. Emminent school budget cuts may have more of your child's school staff jobs on the cutting block.

HOW WILL THESE DECISIONS BE MADE, AND WHO WILL MAKE THEM. THE SUPERINTENDENT RECOMMENDS, AND THE BOARD APPROVES. EVERY DECISION MUST COME BEFORE YOUR BOARD MEMBERS FOR APPROVAL.

Bloggers, we must come out and choose candidates who will seriously and critically think. We lost a lot of good people last year.

LET US ALL PERFORM AT LEAST ONE ACTION THIS YEAR,VOTE IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION. BECAUSE THEN YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SAY ...I'M NOT JUST PART OF THE PROBLEM - I HAD A HAND IN THE SOLUTION... Love my community.

Meet BOE Candidate #6

Joseph M. Ruffin, Sr.
Line 4 Candidate for Three-Year Term

I have been serving on the Plainfield Board of Education since I was appointed by the BOE to fulfill the remaining portion of the unexpired term of a Board Member who resigned. During this time I have attend all but one BOE meeting. I have participated in the expulsion hearings concerning students who had carried weapons into the high school.

In my more than 20 years in academia and pharmaceutical research I have been the employer representative in departmental union issues. Due to my many years of union involvement and the fact that I have no relatives employed by the District, I was asked and accepted to serve on the current teacher Contract Negotiations Committee.

I believe that in the current economic climate that a fair an equitable contract is imperative for the students, teachers, district and residents of Plainfield. I believe that a strong Plainfield School District not only directly benefits the students but also all residents by dispelling misperceptions of our children and increasing property values.

My leadership commitment and ability for the Plainfield Public School District has been evidenced by representation on the local, state, and national levels through discussion on funding, district status, curriculum and seeking out the best leadership and opportunities for our children.

Meet BOE Candidate #4

Lisa C. Logan-Leach
(Incumbent)

My name is Lisa C. Logan-Leach and I am running for re-election to the Plainfield Board of Education for a third term on some key points:

  1. Budget – We are all facing some very tough financial times currently, and our school district is not alone in this matter. With that in mind, we must ensure that any cuts that must be done do not have an immediate impact on our children in the classrooms. There must be a clear and concise plan of action done to ensure that our children’s educational futures are protected at all costs.
  2. Accountability – The Board of Education has one employee that directly reports to them – the Superintendent of Schools. It is imperative that anyone elected to the Board have a full understanding of all recommendations presented prior to voting. We can not afford to have duly elected members to vote yes just for the sake of voting. There should never be a time when a Board Member can not ask the hard questions to obtain the true facts.
  3. Governance – Under the State QSAC Report, it was clearly noted that board governance was a concern. With hard work and clear direct communication, this should never happen.
  4. Curriculum – This is the true foundation for any school district. We must ensure that the very best is offered to our children for their futures. We must ensure that we have all of the necessary supplies needed for our children to be successful.
  5. Community – We must do all that we can to bring in our community to assist in enhancing our schools. There is strength in numbers.

I have lived in Plainfield for almost 30 years and I am a mother of a middle school age child. I graduated from St. Augustine’s College with a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Communications. I have prided myself on having a strong voting record of holding the Superintendent of Schools accountable to the children of Plainfield. With these top five points in mind, it is imperative that we all pull together to heal our community by providing real hope for a change of a better day in the Plainfield Public School District.

Some of my awards and organizations that I am a member are: 2002 recipient of the New Jersey Minority Achievers Program, Certified New Jersey School Board Member by the NJ School Boards Association, Career Day Speaker for numerous schools in Plainfield, Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Member of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Member of the Order of the Eastern Star Rebecca Chapter #1 (P.H.A.), Member of the Daughters of Isis Golconda Court #16, Past President of the Cedarbrook Elementary School PTA 2002-2003, Member of the NAACP, Member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and elected member of the Plainfield Board of Education since 2003.

I ask for your support of Lisa C. Logan-Leach (Line 7) on April 21st for re-election to the Plainfield Board of Education along with Brenda Gilbert (Line 2), Mahogany Hendricks (Line 5) and Katherine Peterson (Line 2).

Quahim (Terrence Williams)
"Move Plainfield Forward"

My name is Terrence "Quahim" Williams and I am a candidate for Plainfield Board of Education. I am running for a two year seat. The magic question is "why?" Well... since moving to Plainfield, a place where I taught 13 years ago, I have felt a need to get involved with the school system to "Move Plainfield Forward."As a candidate, my goals are to address issues related to safety at our high schools. I also would like to work with other stakeholders to invigorate the curriculum and introduce a vetting process for vendors who come to Plainfield to introduce new learning initiatives.

I would also work with the Board to improve communications with our community/residents about our schools' successes and failures so that the community can band together to make all of our schools better.

I am equally interested in working with parents, mentors, businesses, and educators so that we can all collaborate to lift the young people in our community.

I sincerely believe that these goals are a move in the right direction to "Move Plainfield Forward."

Today, I continue to teach in Newark, New Jersey. I bring nearly 17 years of teaching experience to the board. I am married (to a teacher) and have 3 children. I hold a BA Degree in Rutgers University in History, and a MA Degree in Political Science, also from Rutgers University. I am currently a student working toward an advance degree in Education Leadership and Policy.

I can be reached at 973.223.0336 or quahim@quahim.com. I am looking for support from all residents who would like to see change and benefit from it as well.

Note: I am posting these submissions in the order inwhich they were recieved. As you can see the content far exceeds the 75 word limit I originally requested, but because I think it's important that parents and community understand the candidates thoughts, passion and yes qualifications -- I felt it necessary and prudent to reproduce their submissions in its entirety. Consequently, because of the length -- I will only post 1 per day so that there is ample time for folks to read through the candidate's Bio.

Something To BLOG About!

Finally -- something worth blogging about!

As some of you may recall, back in December I did a series of postings on parental affirmations, specifically the 50 I's for Effective Parenting by Principal Kafele.
