PHS Cardinals' Fundraising Underway - Citywide!

PHS Cardinals -- "Go BIG RED"
Calling all COMMUNITY Stakeholders -- the Plainfield High School Cardinals are looking for donations to support their scholastic athletic endeavors for the 08-09 school year.

Players are stationed at all the major intersections throughout the city and would appreciate your support.

You don’t have to do it all – just do a little. There are over 40,000 residents in Plainfield. If each of us gives at least a dollar that’s $40K these young men will have to buy the needed uniforms, equipment and support travel expenses for a successful year.

Show your support by donating at one of the many donation stations! Let’s put our money where we say our hearts lay!

Besides giving a dollar (or more) at street corner fundraisers, how can local small businesses make slightly larger donations? Is anyone in charge of corporate giving for the boosters?

Hello, Renata,

I am a supporter of the Cardinals. However, I DO NOT SUPPORT the way in which the children are being used and put into harm's way by soliciting at major intersections in town. Every time I approach Leland and South Avenue in my car, I am accosted by young people who run out into the street to ask for money. Many times, adults with Cardinals tshirts are standing on the sidewalk, encouraging this VERY DANGEROUS activity. I suggest that parents go out on a weekend and observe the way in which the children run into the streets. It is shameful to see adults supposedly "surpervising" them. What if it were your child about to get hit by a car. They converge from all angles. Donation stations in the parking lots of Walgreen's, Dairy Queen, Times Farmers MArket, and other locations would be much safer. When I was a child, playing in the middle of an intersection was dangerous. Now it is suicide. Please work with parents to find a safe way. If I found that my kid was doing this, I would SUE the district. For other parents, trust me, it's just a matter of time.

I'm not at all sure who is coordinating these efforts from a truly "organized" implementation plan. I only chatted with the young men at a red light and offered my donation.

I would suggest checking with the athletic department...

I have not had the experience of having and/or seeing the children darting in and out traffic. In fact to the contrary and that is why I felt obliged to post information about their fundraising. I have no formal connection with this unit other than I am a Plainfield resident – I saw a good cause and wrote about it. They patiently waited for the light to turn red and cars to stop before approaching the cars. I witnessed this first hand from both the Terrill Road and South Avenue intersection as well as the W.7th and Clinton location. These were NOT little children but rather young men ranging from age 15 –17. They were respectful and polite. I’m sorry your experience differed.

I do like your ideas of locating them in parking lots and would encourage you to reach out to the athletic department and offer this suggestion; like you suggested – work with the parents to make a safe and successful fundraiser. Perhaps they never thought about it…Respectfully - Renata
